City Partner Month - A Q&A with Brian Gregor

We’re wrapping up City Partner Month here at the Center for Faith + Work Los Angeles. We hope it’s been informative and maybe even inspired you to consider joining the individuals who help make our mission a reality year-round as a City Partner yourself.

For our fourth feature, we spent some time with City Partner, Brian Gregor, philosophy professor at California State University, Dominguez Hills. Brian teaches courses in the history of philosophy, philosophy of religion, and religious studies, and his research concerns the relation between religious faith and human subjectivity.

You may remember Brian from previous features as well as a panelist at our Reimagining Work: Academics event in January 2021.

For this feature, we asked Brian to describe his career, the way he sees God in his work, as well as the draw he had to CFWLA and call to be a City Partner.

Center for Faith + Work Los Angeles: How did you get involved with CFWLA (how did you get connected and what about it caught your attention)?

Brian Gregor: I first heard about CFWLA while attending Pacific Crossroads Church in downtown LA.

I think philosophy is a gift of God. It asks fundamental questions about the things that matter most.

The whole idea of thinking through the relation between faith and work really caught my interest. Shortly after that, I met Steve Lindsey in a small group, and he has since become a good friend.

Center for Faith + Work Los Angeles: Tell us about your work. How do you see God working through your industry?

Brian Gregor: I am a philosophy professor at California State University, Dominguez Hills. It's both an honor and a joy.

I teach undergraduates, so for most of them, it is their first exposure to philosophy. I think philosophy is a gift of God. It asks fundamental questions about the things that matter most: Who are we? What is true? What is good? What is beautiful? What does it look like to flourish as a human being?

I love what CFWLA is doing.  It’s exciting to gain a deeper understanding of the goodness of work and its place in God’s kingdom.

It's a blessing to be able to discuss these things with students. My goal is to help them ask these questions as honestly and openly as possible, without the pressure of arriving at quick or easy answers.

Center for Faith + Work Los Angeles: What inspired you to become a City Partner?

Brian Gregor: I love what CFWLA is doing.  It's exciting to gain a deeper understanding of the goodness of work and its place in God's kingdom.  I want others to be able to benefit from that.
